 Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA)
Your doctor has asked us to make an appointment for you to have a Fine Needle Aspiration.
What is Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA)?
Fine Needle Aspiration is done by having a technician into a swollen area that your doctor wants to study. The technician then takes out cells to study them under a microscope. If necessary, before the technician inserts the needle, you will receive a local anesthetic to numb the area. If you are a patient who is staying in the hospital, we will do the test at your bedside. If you are a patient who is not in the hospital, you may have the procedure done at:

Outpatient Laboratory
Hermann Professional Building
Suite 1521 TEL: 704-6200

Although this test is scheduled by your doctor, you may change the appointment time by calling:

  • CYTOLOGY, 713/794-6464
 Special Notes
  • You may have slight bruising and tenderness, but problems or infections are rare.
  • In most cases, this test will eliminate the need for you to have a biopsy.
  • You do not need to restrict your diet or activity before or after this test.
  • This test will last approximately one hour.
 Remember
Please be sure to bring the paperwork your doctor gave you (orders for the laboratory). If you currently are not registered at Hermann Hospital, the Outpatient Laboratories at Hermann Professional Building and Houston Medical Center will register you when you arrive for your blood test. If you are, be prepared to tell us:

  • your name
  • your date of birth
  • your social security number
  • your doctor's name
  • the name of the test your doctor wants you to have.
If you are having your test done at a laboratory in the Hermann Hospital complex, you may park in the Hermann Professional Building Garage.
