Fitzgerald Factor Assay

SYNONYM: High Molecular Weight Kininogen (HMWK)

HERMANN TEST CODE: 26-00370

CPT CODE: 85293

SPECIMEN REQUIREMENT: 5 mL blood (minimum 4.5 ml), blue top tube (sodium citrate), mixed well. Test result would not be diagnostic if patient has been on anticoagulant (Heparin or Coumadin) or there is Heparin in sample.

TEST AVAILABILITY: Performed by Coagulation Section in Hermann Laboratory, Mon-Fri, 7 AM-3 PM. Reporting time in 24 hours. Specimen must be in the laboratory by 10 AM to be performed on the same day

METHODOLOGY: Clot-based testing using PTT

CLINICAL UTILIZATION: Diagnosis of Fitzgerald factor deficiency

REFERENCE RANGE: 60-148 %

INTERPRETATION:

Fitzgerald factor augments the formation of Factor XIIa. Patients with deficiency of Fitzgerald factor lacks bleeding manifestations. Some patients have been reported to have thromboembolic episodes.

Deficiency of Fitzgerald factor is a rare disease which should only be considered when a prolonged PTT is not explained by other more common etiologies such as lupus anticoagulant, hemophilia, von Willebrand's disease, Heparin in patient's sample, etc.
