Case 1 Micro Multiple myeloma, mediium power of bone marrow tissue section showing sheets of plamsa.
Case 1 Micro Multiple myeloma, high power showing sheets of plasma cells.
Case 2 Micro Acute myelogenous leukemia, low power of bone marrow aspirate showing monomorphic population of cells.
Case 2 Micro AML, high power of bone marrow aspirate showing several blasts with large nuclei and prominent nucleoli and cytoplasmic Auer rods. One blast is in mitosis.
Case 3 Micro Hairy Cell Leukemia, high power of peripheral blood smear showing a small normal lymphocyte and a "hairy cell" with finger nuclear chromatin, slightly larger nucleus and very lightstaining cytoplasm with fine cytoplasmic projections.
Case 3 Micro Hairy Cell Leukemia, another hairy cell next to a small lymphocyte.
Case 4 Micro Hodgkin's Disease (Nodular sclerosis type), low power of mediastinal mass showing bands of fibrous connective tissue subdividing the mass into nodules.
Case 4 Micro Hodgkin's Disease (Nodular sclerosis type), medium power showing lacunar cells, cells with clear space around the nucleus formed by retraction of the cytoplasm, which are associated with the nodular sclerosis type of hodgkin's disease.
Case 4 Micro Hodgkin's Disease, high power showing typical Reed-Sternberg cell necessary for the diagnosis of Hodgkin's Disease. The background cells are a mixture of lymphocytes, plasma cells, eosinophils, and histiocytes (the "immunoreactive background") and are not part of the malignant proliferation.
Case 4 Micro Hodgkin's Disease, high power of another Reed-Sternberg cell.
Case 5 Micro Burkitt's Lymphoma, low pwer of lymph node with Burkitt's lymphoma showing the characteristic "starry sky" appearance. The "stars" are due to large histiocytes and the malignant cells are the lymphocytes.
Case 5 Micro Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia-L3/Burkitt's lymphoma: High power of bone marrow aspirate showing the large lymphoid blasts of ALL-L3 or Burkitt's Lymphoma with high nuclear to cytoplasmic ratio, dark-blue cytoplasm, and small lipid-containing vacuoles in the cytoplasm and over the nucleus. ALL-L3 and Burkitt's are the same disease, both are highgrade B cell malignancies.
Case 6 Micro Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, low power of peripheral blood smear showing a markedly increased and monomorphic white blood cell population.
Case 6 Micro Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, high power of peripheral blood smear showing numerous small lymphocytes which are morphologically normal, but represent a low-grade B cell malignancy. CLL and Small lymphocytic lymphoma represent the same disease with perhaps different clinical symptoms, e.g., peripheral blood lymphocytosis vs lymph node involvement, respectively.
Case 7 Micro Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia, low power of peripheral blood smear showing a markedly increased white blood cell count.
Case 7 Micro Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia, high power of peripheral blood smear showing numerous granulocytes of varying types and stages of development including both mature and immature cells. Other fields would show basophils, which would help with differentiating this from a granulocytic response to infection.
Case 8 Micro Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia, low power of bone marrow core biopsy showing a "packed Marrow", i.e., a very hypercellular marrow as seen in several different types of hematologic malignancies.
