2

Fallopian Tube

Gross

Ectopic (tubal) pregnancy. Black (hemorrhagic) tissue consistent with placental tissue and blood clot in distal one third of falllopian tube. Note no fetal tissue is identifiable as is often the case.

3

Fallopian Tube

LP

Ectopic (tubal) pregnancy. Wall of fallopian tube with stretched fimbriae, hemorrhage, and pale placental villi.

4

Fallopian Tube

MP

Ectopic (tubal) pregnancy. Mucosa and lumen of the fallopian tube with columnar epithelium and villi lined by cyto- and syncytial trophoblastic cells.

5

Fallopian Tube

HP

Same. Note inner layer of pale of cytotrophoblasts and outer eosinophilic layer of syncytial trophoblasts.

6

Ovary

Gross

Dermoid cyst (mature cystic teratoma). Note rounded protuberances (mamillae or Rokitansky's protuberances) from which white structures (teeth) protrude. Also note the yellow-tan greasy materail which is sebaceous material and poorly sen hairs.

7

Ovary

Gross

Dermoid cyst (mature cystic teratoma). Note rounded protuberances, mamillae or Rokitansky's protuberances. The gray-tan areas may represent sebacous material.

8

Ovary

LP

Dermoid cyst (mature cystic teratoma). Note skin like areas with epidermis and sebaceous glands as well as other foci of surface pseudostratified columnar epithelium and deep foci of smooth muscle.

9

Ovary

LP

Dermoid cyst with epidermis and pilosebaceous structures.

10

Ovary

HP

Same. Also note ducts resembling eccrine sweat glands.

11

Uterus and adnexa

Gross

Bilateral serous cystadenomas. (Cannot make the diagnosis on this photo alone).

12

Ovary

Gross

Serous cystadenoma. Note the characteristic thin walled, multilocular cyst (may also be unilocular) usually contains watery fluid.

13

Ovary

LP

Serous cystadenoma. Unilocular cyst lined by single layer of epithelial cells which in some areas resemble fallopian tube or may be flattened (pink area is collagen in the wall).

14

Ovary

LP

Serous cystadenoma. Multilocular cyst.

15

Ovary

MP

Serous cystadenoma. Multilocular cyst lined in some foci by low cuboidal or by flattened epithelial cells. One space lined by columnar epithelium suggestive of fallopian tube (ciliated, non-ciliated and peg cells). Note pale pink area is a corpora albicans.

16

Ovary

Gross

Serous cystadenocarcinoma. Note that the cyst contains papillary and solid areas.

17

Ovary

Gross

Serous cystadenocarcinoma. Note the cyst has numerous papillary projections which form a relatively solid area. There is focal hemorrhage.

18

Omentum

Gross

Implantation metastases. Multiple small serosal nodules in the omentum. This was from an ovarian cystadenocarcinoma, but there are no gross features that allow that diagnosis.

19

Ovary

LP

Serous cystadenocarcinoma. Note the papillary areas and the more invasive glandular areas.

20

Ovary

MP

Serous cystadenocarcinoma. Note papillary foci (central fibrovascular stalk covered by epithelial cells) and the invasive area of poorly formed glands.

21

Ovary

HP

Serous cystadenocarcinoma. Area of poorly formed glands with irregular often slit-like lumens.

22

Ovary

HP

Serous cystadenocarcinoma. Papillary area with some large and some fine papillae and psammoma bodies. This area alone would be difficult to distinguish from a borderline tumor.

23

Ovary

LP

Borderline tumor. Note papillary structures ont he cyst lumen and the ovarian surface (peritoneal serous proliferations). Note the absence of destructive stromal invasion.

24

Ovary

LP

Borderline tumor. In this area the ovarian surface (peritoneum) is free of proliferations. The papillary projections are in the cyst lumen.

25

Ovary

MP

Borderlinen tumor. Papillary configuration with slight epithelial tufting.

26

Ovary

MP

Borderline tumor. Extensive epithelial tufting typical of borderline tumor.

27

Uterus

Gross

Adenomyosis (endometrial glands and stroma extending into the myometrium for more than 1/2 low power field). Typical appearance of section of uterus with adenomyosis showing thickened myometrium (especially posteriorly) and trabeculation and hemorrhagic foci.

28

Ovary

Gross

Endometriosis. Cross section of multiple chocolate cysts (often more brown than black).

29

Placenta

Gross

Complete Hydatidiform Mole. Note appearance similar to clusters of grapes (swollen chorionic villi).

30

Breast

Gross

Breast carcinoma. Note large irregular mass distorting one quadrant of breast and nipple.

31

Woman

Gross

Breast carcinoma. Note nipple retraction and distortion of skin of left breast.

32

Breast

Gross

Breast carcinoma. Note firm, white irregularly demarcated area with radiating pattern typical of scirrhous, invasive ductal (adeno)carcinoma.

33

Breast

LP

Breast carcinoma, invasive ductal (adeno)carcinoma. Note cords and tubules haphazardly infiltrating desmoplastic (dense collagen) stroma.

34

Breast

LP

Same.

35

Breast

MP

Breast carcinoma, invasive ductal (adeno)carcinoma. Note some larger nests of tumor and the infiltration of fat.

36

Breast

HP

Same. Nests of malignant ductal cells. Note nuclear irregularity.

37

Breast

Gross

Fibroadenoma. Circumscribed, white rubbery nodule with slit-like spaces.

38

Breast

LP

Fibroadenoma. circumscribed, nodule well demarcated from surrounding breast tissue composed of fibrous tissue and ducts.

39

Breast

MP

Fibroadenoma. Fibrous tissue with slit-like compressed ducts.

40

Breast

Gross

Fibrocystic changes. irregular firm white foci (fibrosis) and cysts.

41

Breast

LP

Fibrocystic changes. Macro and microscopic cysts and fibrosis are features most easily seen at this mag.

42

Breast

Fibrocystic changes. Two cysts. One lined by apocrine metaplasia (large cells with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm).

43

Breast
