 Pinworm Preparation Test
Your doctor has asked that you have a pinworm test that will find out if pinworms are in your lower digestive tract. Please pick up a specimen collection kit from one of the following laboratories:

  • Outpatient Laboratory, Hermann Professional Building, Suite 1521, 704-6200.

    Monday-Thursday (8:00 A.M. - 11:00 A.M.).

  • Outpatient Laboratory, Houston Medical Center, Suite 630, 704-1724.

    Monday-Thursday (8:00 A.M. - 11:00 A.M.).

  • Hermann Hospital Clinical Laboratory, Basement of Jones Pavilion, 797-2857.

    Sunday - Saturday (7:00 A.M. - 7:00 P.M.).

How to use the Pinworm Collection Kit
  • When pinworms live in the intestines, they crawl to the outside of the digestive tract and lay their eggs at the anus (the lower opening of the intestinal tract). This often happens at night when the person is asleep. Therefore, the sample should be collected early in the morning before the person has a bowel movement or bathes.
  • With the patient resting comfortably, spread the buttocks so that you are looking at the anus. Using the Scotch tape swab, apply the sticky side of the tape to the anus.
  • Then place the tape, sticky side down, on the clean glass slide. If you are using the plastic paddle, place it in the container provided.
  • Avoid touching the sticky surfaces. Handle the tape only by the edge.
  • When you have completed the collection, close the container tightly and refrigerate the specimen until you return it to the laboratory.
  • Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly with soap after you are finished.
  • Return it as soon as possible to the location where you picked up the collection kit.
